Everyone with interest in brain injury and applying “can do” approaches to rehabilitation and recovery

WHAT

A participatory gathering where individuals with brain injuries can tell their stories and seek firsthand insights from leading scientists, and from artists who understand the power of art in recovery.

WHY

The ultimate goal of this conference is to attract resources and raise awareness about the need for a brain education and rehabilitation centre in Battle River region, enabling those impacted to recover in familiar surroundings, with ongoing support providing hope for their loved ones. The conference will examine and report on recent breakthroughs and innovations in understanding the brain, neuroscience, and rehabilitation processes, especially neuroplasticity and therapies through the arts.

Dr. Jacob Krive

AI in Life, Health, and Community

Dr. Jacob Krive is a Clinical Associate Professor of biomedical informatics in the colleges of Applied Health Sciences and Medicine at University of Illinois at Chicago; Clinician Researcher at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine; and Associate Professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Krive’s research interests include medical augmented intelligence (AI), clinical analytics, and decision support. He combines professional work in managing large teams of analytics professionals in the healthcare provider and technology organizations with academic contributions to innovate in advancing analytical solutions for practical applications in patient care. Dr. Krive has 30+ years of technology experience, beginning with systems engineering passions which led him to pursue career opportunities in healthcare long before AI mattered in the process of healthcare delivery. He pursues partnerships with physicians, scientists, and leaders to initiate projects of scientific inquiry of the applied nature. Dr. Krive is a frequent speaker at national and international informatics and medical conferences.

AI to Advance Community Neurology Care

Aiden Krive is an aspiring scientist and a curious high-school student with passion for inquiries into the emerging cutting-edge disciplines at the crossroads of biology and computer science. He is particularly interested in investigating translational community impacts of genomics and proteomics enabled by advances in computer artificial intelligence and bioinformatics to support rapid development and translation of science into medical practice.

Dr. Jamie Dustin Marquart, who practices in Castor registered with The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta 1917, is dedicated to life-wide patient-centered family medical care including preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, and management of ongoing health need.

He has a strong belief in patient-centered care, ensuring that treatment plans are tailored to individual needs, values, and circumstances in a holistic approach to health, considering the physical, mental, emotional, and social factors that influence a patient's well-being.

Dr. Russell Schnell grew up in a small town, Castor, Alberta that he considers the best place to live. He was related to over 200 people in the area as 30 related “Germans from Russia” farmers settled around Castor following the Communist revolution. He attended the University of Alberta, Memorial University, Newfoundland and the University of Wyoming, USA, where he earned a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science. He spent 45 years working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration based in Boulder, CO, including 2 years in Kenya, Africa, and was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize along with Al Gore. The University of Alberta awarded him a Dr. Sci. degree in 2015. He serves as Honourary Chair (2015-present), Association for Life-wide Living (ALL) of Alberta and a founding member of the BRAIN Foundation board.

Shorefast Institute

Catherine (Cathy) Newhook brings over two decades of experience in public policy, civic engagement and community building to her work with the Shorefast Institute. A connector at heart, Cathy has spent her career building bridges between institutions, communities, and governments – working across federal, provincial, and municipal levels, as well as in the non-profit and post-secondary education sectors. She comes to Shorefast from Memorial University's Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, where she spent the last decade facilitating programs and platforms to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration on public policy and regional economic development in the province. A Newfoundlander with an endless curiosity and a deep affection for new places (and their people), Cathy lives in Torbay (NL) with her family.

The Palix Foundation founded the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative, which works to align the science of brain development to policy and practice, and to support the application of this science at the individual, organizational, and system levels. Their work includes the Brain Story, which uses metaphor to translate complex brain science into an accessible and engaging form.
